Average sleeping heart rate is your mean HR across all phases of the night. It normally runs 10–20 bpm below daytime resting HR: at night the parasympathetic nervous system dominates and the heart slows down.
What counts as normal. For most healthy adults the average night-time heart rate falls between 50 and 70 bpm, with a nightly minimum of 45–65. Endurance-trained people often sit at 40–50 bpm, which is fine. But "normal" here is always personal: the spread between individuals is wider than the difference between a good and a bad night for one person.
How it moves through the night. The night runs in waves: HR is lowest in deep sleep and climbs back toward daytime levels during REM, which is expected. A healthy pattern drops through the first half of the night and bottoms out roughly 3–4 hours after falling asleep. A flat, elevated line with no dip means the body never switched into recovery.
